My Bone To Pick With Pink

Ok, I have no choice but to listen to work radio or complete silence during my shift and I'd much prefer the former than the latter.

I was half listening to Pink's new song while working on some new minutes to upload. I'm not really focused on the song but I'm not much focused on my work either when one or two phrases caught my ear. I began listening and by the time the song was over I was appalled that A) someone thought this was a good idea and B) Pink agreed to it. I don't know who actually wrote the song but I'm surprised it's on the airwaves.

Quoted below are the lyrics.

I don't know if I can yell any louder
How many time I've kicked you outta here?
Or said something insulting?
Da da da, da da

I can be so mean when I wanna be
I am capable of really anything
I can cut you into pieces
But my heart is broken
Da da da, da da

Please don't leave me
Please don't leave me
I always say how I don't need you
But it's always gonna come right back to this
Please, don't leave me

How did I become so obnoxious?
What is it with you that makes me act like this?
I've never been this nasty
Da da da, da da

Can't you tell that this is all just a contest?
The one that wins will be the one that hits the hardest
But baby I don't mean it
I mean it, I promise
Da da da, da da

Please don't leave me
Oh please don't leave me
I always say how I don't need you
But it's always gonna come right back to this
Please, don't leave me

I forgot to say out loud how beautiful you really are to me
I cannot be without, you're my perfect little punching bag
And I need you, I'm sorry
Da da da, da da

You say I don't need you
But it's always gonna come right back
It's gonna come right back to this
Please, don't leave me

WOW! Who knew Pink was an advocate for abusive relationships? The entire song is about how she's an emotionally abusive bitch and yet she wants him to stay with her and be her "perfect little punching bag." Like, really? This is the sort of mentality you want to put into the minds of the youth of America?

I mean, I know the popular defense for abusers is "I don't mean it" but clearly the behavior is meant when it's habitually repeated. I mean, there is no excuse to push someone away repeatedly and then draw them back in only to repeat the cycle and yet this song tries to make the antagonist (Pink) sound sympathetic. Personally, I'm ashamed that this is what music has come to...along with numerous other examples.

  1. I think it makes the abusive dynamic more apparant when the woman is the antagonist (in the song). I see what you are saying though. Violence shouldn't be made light of.
